Oakville and the Underground Railroad
 An Education Program for
Grade 5-8
Explore Oakville's relationship with the United States in the context of the Underground Railroad. Oakville Harbour played a significant role in the journey to Canada for many freedom seekers. Key figures in the oakville Underground Railroad story are introduced through the exhibition "Freedom, Opportunity and Family: Oakville's Black History".

Celebration of Winter Past and Present - An Education Program for Grade Two
 In the 19th and early 20th centuries, winter celebrations and pastimes were a familiar tradition at the Erchless Estate, the Chisholm family home. Today in Oakville, families and communities celebrate diverse winter traditions from around the world. These celebrations reflect values and beliefs that are important to each culture. Special foods, clothes, music, symbols and events are associated with these festivities. While visiting their community museum, Grade 2 students will gain an understanding of diverse cultural winter celebrations in Canada today, holiday celebrations of the past at the Erchless Estate, and historical winter traditions and pastimes in Oakville.
Activities include:
- examining and discussing symbolic objects significant to diverse cultural winter celebrations
- touring through the Chisholm family home
- participating in a hands-on activity
- using the “magic eye” technique to look at historic winter photographs and documents

Oakville: A Case Study in a Community's Growth, Past, Present and Future - An In-Class Education Program
Using Oakville as a case study of a British North American settlement, students will explore the unique origins of the town of Oakville and various periods of its growth and development. Topics of discussion include:
- British North American policy of land settlement in Upper Canada
- The early days of the region and the founding of the Town of Oakville
- Agricultural industry in Oakville
- The appeal of Oakville and Oakville as a suburb
- Issues of urban growth and planning in the 21st century
Students will have the opportunity to use their research and inquiry skills while working with parts of the Oakville Museum’s rich collection of primary documents including maps, newspapers, and various documents. This program will use the events of the past to help students understand issues within their community and its future.
Curriculum links: Grade 7 History – British North America
Grade 8 Geography – Patterns in Human
Program length: 2 hours (Suitable for a morning or afternoon)
Cost: $6 per student
Accommodates: 1 class per 2 hour session

Remembering the Great War
Grade 10
The Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate explores the words of the First World War in the exhibition "Words to End all Wars: Correspondence During the Great War". Understand the emotions and experiences of Oakville's soldiers through their writings in diaries letters and poems and feel the effect the war had on the homefront. "Remembering our Own" gives students hads on experiences with primary documents and artifacts from the First World War. Students will develop their practical critical-thinking and research skills through activities directly linked to the Ontario Curriculum for Grade 10 History.

In-Class - Early Settler Program
 The Oakville Museum will come to your school with a hands-on program for your Grade 3 class
This program is designed to help students learn about the early settler period from a local perspective. Students will examine local historical resources such as photoraphs, letters, and artifacts, during their study of the early settler period.
Activities include:
- working with pioneer artifacts
- using a school slate and writing a letter with a quill pen
- making a toy and examining examples of early toys
Your booking package will include additional museum resources, suggested activities and a pre-visit activity to compliment your class study of the early settler period.
Program details:
- 2 hours (program length)
- $6 per student
- max 30 students per session
- 2 sessions per day (morning and afternoon)
- please add $30 to total booking fee for schools outside of Oakville

Christmas Discovery Program
 Canadian Christmas traditions of the early 20th century will be the focus of your students' exploration into the difference between past and present. The Chisholm family home will be decorated for the holiday season for your students to explore. While participating in hands-on activities, students will look at traditional Christmas gifts and decorations, play with old-fashioned toys, watch a magic lantern show and discover the simplicity of Christmas stockings long ago.
Activities include:
- touring through the restored Chisholm family home
- making a Christmas decoration to take back to school
- comparing old and new toys, including advertising
- participating in an interactive magic lantern show in the museum theatre
